Announcing the release of The Light We Carry via a short video on Instagram, Michelle Obama acknowledged that since publishing her globally successful debut memoir, Becoming, the world has changed and so she has been reflecting on the ways that she has had to deal with challenging situations and put them all in her new book.

She said: “We’ve seen a global pandemic; we’ve seen an insurrection, a rising tide of hate and bigotry and intolerance and a whole lot more. And it’s often left me feeling out of balance… and yes at times I felt afraid. How do we overcome our fears? How can we channel our frustration into something positive? And how do we rekindle that flame that’s inside all of us?”

Promo for the book on her book’s website describes how in typical Obama fashion, [remember she coined the phrase: ‘when they go low, we go high’?], she will share stories and insightful reflections in the book with the hope of raising the vibration of those around us. “It is her belief that when we light up for others, we can illuminate the richness and potential of the world around us, discovering deeper truths and new pathways for progress.”

Obama will harness her experiences of being a mother, daughter, spouse, friend, and First Lady to offer advice and guidance on how she deals with and overcomes challenging situations.

According to the website, “she details her most valuable practices, like “starting kind,” “going high,” and assembling a “kitchen table” of trusted friends and mentors. With trademark humour, candour, and compassion, she also explores issues connected to race, gender, and visibility, encouraging readers to work through fear, find strength in community, and live with boldness.”

“I hope this book means as much to you as it does to me.”

In her Instagram video, Obama said: “I never thought I would be the author of one book, let alone two. But I’ve found that writing this has been a way for me to gather my thoughts and find more clarity during this time. So, I hope this book means as much to you as it does to me.”
