Have we been using moisturisers wrong all this time? Beauty expert Funmi Fetto has come up with a brilliant perspective on how to use moisturisers and it makes so much sense.
When Funmi Fetto shares words of beauty wisdom, we drop everything and listen, okay? Currently the beauty editor at British Vogue, beauty director at Observer Magazine and the author of Palette: A Black Beauty Bible, we wager there is little Funmi Fetto doesn’t know about how to get glowy, radiant skin. In a recent Instagram post, Funmi dropped some truths about how we women struggle to master moisturisers and to find the right ones for our skin.
She said: “I have this theory about moisturisers, I think they’re a little bit like bras, most people are wearing the wrong one. I say this because in all my years as a beauty editor I cannot even begin to tell you how many women are asking me and keep asking me about moisturisers. They are constantly on the quest to find the right one for them.”
“I have this theory about moisturisers, I think they’re a little bit like bras, most people are wearing the wrong one.”
So far so accurate. Who hasn’t gone through the long winded and expensive trial and error of buying and testing out new moisturiser products? Even with her experience, Funmi admits that she too has gone through this process. From creams that make us break out to those that give us an oily sheen, it can be tempting to just give up and live with these results, but Funmi says you don’t have to.
“No one wants dull skin. That is not what a moisturiser is supposed to do, and all these moisturisers were doing that. In the end I just kind of gave up. I just kind of thought well, I’ve got oily skin, it’s fine, I don’t need a moisturiser, well this is a big mistake as every skin needs moisturising.”
“No one wants dull skin.”
The solution to finding the right treatment for your skin is straightforward. As with most things, we need to step away from the one size fits all mentality. It seems so simple, but Funmi’s theory makes complete sense. She said:
“I think the best way to find the right moisturiser for you is to use the same approach that you use for getting dressed from your wardrobe. So, when you think about your wardrobe and you think about what to wear, you take into consideration things like ‘what’s the weather saying?’, ‘what’s the climate?’, ‘what’s the occasion?’, ‘how long do I need to wear it for?’.” We need to think about our moisturiser in that way too.
Will it be windy, how much sun will you be exposed to, how much makeup will you be wearing? All of these types of questions should influence what moisturiser you use that day. “All of these kinds of things play a part in the choices that you make, and in the same way, but in addition to that, you need to think about having a wardrobe of moisturisers because you will need different moisturisers at different points.”
“Creating a wardrobe of moisturisers to cater to the changing aspects of our daily life is the way to go.”
This approach to skincare is radical in its simplicity. Why would we stick to the same set of moisturisers and beauty regime day in and day out when outside influences impact on our skin so much? Creating a wardrobe of moisturisers to cater to the changing aspects of our daily life is the way to go. “Whether that’s you thinking ‘I need a night cream, so I need something heavier’ or ‘it’s really warm so I need something lighter’ or ‘I want a matte texture and so I want something that delivers that’, you kind of have to think about it in that respect.”
All this means is that we need to begin experimenting with moisturisers once again to figure out what makes products make it into our exclusive new moisturiser wardrobe!
