Get ready for Pop Up Africa 2.0 as the team behind the popular annual takeover of Spitalfields Market featuring the best in retail and cuisine from Africa and the diaspora, launch their series of late-night events in the capital.

Pop Up Africa Lates is a night market with a difference, featuring a range of Africa-inspired products for sale alongside live music and DJ sets.

Visitors can expect a night time takeover of retail spaces in London, with the first event, taking place at Brixton Village in south London on 4 July 2019.

We spoke to Pop Up Africa’s Founder and Creative Director, Jessica Laditan, to ask what visitors can expect to see and do at Pop Up Africa Lates.

What can people expect at Pop Up Africa Lates?

Visitors can expect a nice eclectic vibe when they come to one of our ‘Lates’. We’re working to provide an interesting and fresh approach to Thursday night drinks. There will be a range of traders selling things like street food, clothing and beauty products alongside DJ sets and a live acoustic set with performers like DEMIMA whose art is inspired by Africa-Utopia and divine femininity and DJ Cyndi Handson, a seasoned DJ, Promoter, South London influencer who will be playing a soulful selection of music of the African diaspora off and on continent.

Why Market Row with Brixton Village?

Since starting Pop Up Africa we’ve been overwhelmed by the growth not just in attendance but also the interest in Africa inspired products and the UK African fashion and music scene. Along with the growth, there’s been demand for more Pop Up Africa events across more locations. Brixton Village and Market Row approached us to bring something fresh and new to the market as part of their plans to diversify the space and to maximise their night time economy. This sounded like a great opportunity for us and our following, so we leapt at it.

What brands will be showcasing their wares?

We have a wide range of brands on board including; Food Junkee, An East London based West African food truck, Young Mary’s, handmade scented candles, Kentrell, a women’s wear label specialising in Ankara print body suits and leotards and Abike Studios, who specialise in Afro inspired Perspex jewellery and accessories to name a few.
