No doubt the pressure is on when you are picked to play one of the most successful and recognisable music icons in the world, but it helps when you have the backing and support of the Queen of Rock and Roll herself.

A new musical based on the life of Tina Turner is set to open in the West End in spring 2018 and Adrienne Warren has been announced by Tina Turner herself, as the actor who will portray her.

Warren, who is making her West End Debut in the new musical TINA – The Tina Turner Musical, gave audiences a sneak peek on what to expect at the recent launch of the project, when she belted out three songs, including two duets with Tina.

A real talent, Warren, who has previously worked in Shuffle Along on Broadway, for which she received a Tony Award nomination, has also appeared in Bring It On The Musical, Dreamgirls, and The Wiz. Speaking after the launch, she said: “She’s a motivation, inspiration to all women, and especially women of colour.

“It’s the first time I ever realised that I could grow up in the South and have dreams that would take me all over the world. I wouldn’t have become a performer if it wasn’t for Tina Turner.”

“Growing up watching Tina, I knew how to shake my hips before I could tie my shoes,” Warren said. “I am so grateful to our creative team and producers for entrusting me with this responsibility. I say responsibility, because I am a Tina Turner fan first. I am elated, honoured and humbled. Meeting and working with Tina is and will always be one of the great moments in life. Can’t wait to see you in London.”

Tina Turner, who was present at the unveiling event in London, added: “It has been my joy to introduce Adrienne today. From the moment I met her at our last workshop I saw her exceptional talent. Playing this role will require immense physical and emotional commitment, and bravery too. We are thrilled to have found Adrienne, and I very much look forward to spending more time together and developing a special friendship I know will grow even stronger as we prepare the production for the Aldwych Theatre. We can’t wait to welcome her to the show.”

TINA – The Tina Turner Musical was written by Katori Hall, alongside Frank Ketelaar and Kees Prins and is directed by Phyllida Lloyd.

The show opens at London’s Aldwych Theatre next year with performances set to begin on 21 March 2018, booking until the 16 June 2018.
