Chart-topping songstress, fashion icon and inspirational boss lady, Kelly Rowland is a woman unapologetically slaying in her own lane! As she turns 39, we take a look at a woman who is clearly living her own destiny.

Ms Rowland, aka Kelendria Trene Rowland, has proven time and time again that there isn’t much she can’t do. As she celebrates her 39th turn around the earth on 11 February, we highlight ten times she reminded us that she is a Glamazon and a boss that we just can’t help but admire!

1 – More than 30 million records sold

Kelly Rowland has sold over 30 million records worldwide as a solo artist! She may have risen to fame as a member of Destiny’s Child but when she stepped out as a solo artist, she proved that she can definitely shine on her own. She was also the first member of Destiny’s Child to achieve a worldwide number-one single and win a Grammy for ‘Dilemma’ (her duet with rapper Nelly).

2 – Slaying on the big screen as well as on the mic

In 2003, Kelly made her big-screen debut as Kia Waterson in the slasher film Freddy vs Jason, which grossed an impressive $114.5 million at the box office. She’s also starred in favourites like Think Like a Man and the classic sitcom Girlfriends with Tracee Ellis Ross. Kelly really is a woman that can do it all!

3 – She launched a charity to support teenage girls

In 2010 Kelly wanted to give back and launched her own charity called I Heart My Girlfriends. I Heart My Girlfriends was set up to be a support system for teenage girls. The charity focuses on a range of issues including self-esteem, date violence prevention, women in sports, education, drug and alcohol avoidance along with many other important issues. Women supporting women that’s the way it should be!

4 – She’s an ambassador for MTV’s Staying Alive foundation

In 2008 Kelly collaborated with MTV to become an ambassador for their Staying Alive Foundation. The foundation aims to reduce stigma against people living with HIV and AIDs. Her work with the charity took her to Tanzania and Kenya. She also publicly took an HIV and AIDS test to raise awareness of the diseases.

5 – She’s a proud mama

Her glow has extra shine since giving birth to her son Titan in 2014. It’s clear that Kelly loves being a mother, she takes every opportunity to declare how much of a blessing her little man is to her. Kelly Rowland: “He is the greatest thing that ever happened to me.” We do love a Mama Bear!

 

 6 – Kelly has accolades and awards for days

Kelly is no stranger to winning awards. From winning Grammys to being honoured by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers & Essence magazine for her contributions to music. She was named TV personality of the year and Best Dressed at the 2012 Glamour Women of the year awards. It’s great to see her appreciated across so many spaces.

7 – She created an anthem for girls/women everywhere

Kelly released the song and music video ‘Crown’ in partnership with Dove as part of their “Love Your Hair” campaign. The end result was a song and video that empowers girls and young women to be proud of their crowns and in a world where hair discrimination for black women is very real.

 

8 – Kelly teamed up with Michelle Obama

Queens recognise Queens, right? So, it’s not surprising that Michelle Obama asked Kelly to be a part of her charity single ‘This Is for My Girls’. The single also features Missy Elliot, Kelly Clarkson, Zendaya and Janelle Monae. Kelly Rowland and the other singers got together to raise funds and awareness of Obama’s Let Girls Learn initiative. Let Girls Learn aims to boost education rates amongst adolescent girls around the world who are denied the right to education.

9 – Kelly took pen to paper and became an author

Kelly certainly is a multitalented woman. In 2017 she challenged her inner writer and released a book called Whoa Baby: A guide for New Moms Who Feel Overwhelmed and Freaked Out (and wonder what the #*$& just happened. Kelly’s book serves as an honest guide to the rollercoaster that is motherhood!

 

10 – Fashion and fitness collaboration with Fabletics

Health is wealth and across her timelines, Kelly constantly shows us fitness goals. She teamed up with athleisure fashion brand, Fabletics, to contribute to the goal of helping women look and feel good while working out. Kelly told People magazine: “I want women to feel strong when they put this collection on. Like they can conquer the world.”
