In what can only be described as a match made in Black movie heaven comes a romantic film starring two of our favourite contemporary actors in a touching love story, The Photograph.
Both Issa Rae (HBO’s Insecure, Little) and Lakeith Stanfield (FX’s Atlanta, Sorry to Bother You) look incredible in the film’s trailer (watch below) and we can’t wait to watch this depiction of Black love on the big screen.
Rae, who also served as one of the film’s executive producer plays Mae Morton, connects with Stanfield’s character Michael Block in a romance where Rae’s character must learn from the secrets in her mother’s past if she is to move forward and allow herself to love and be loved.
When famed photographer Christina Eames unexpectedly dies, she leaves her estranged daughter Mae Morton hurt, angry and full of questions. When a photograph tucked away in a safe-deposit box is found, Mae finds herself on a journey delving into her mother’s early life and ignites a powerful, unexpected romance with a rising-star journalist, Michael Block.
The film is directed by Stella Meghie (The Weekend, Jean of the Joneses) and is from her original screenplay, a sweeping love story about forgiveness and finding the courage to seek the truth, no matter where it may lead you.
The Photograph is produced by Will Packer, blockbuster producer of Girls Trip, the Ride Along franchise, Think Like a Man among many other top 10 movies and by James Lopez, president of Will Packer Productions.
The film also stars Chanté Adams (Roxanne Roxanne) as Mae’s young mother Christina, Y’lan Noel (HBO’s Insecure) as Christina’s secret love, and Rob Morgan (Mudbound) as Isaac Jefferson, a New Orleans fisherman with a mysterious connection to Mae’s mother.
We’ve heard whispers that the film could be this generation’s Love Jones! Those are some pretty big shoes to fill. Either way, we’re looking forward to seeing beautiful Black folk falling in love, a great storyline and excellent lighting!
The UK release can’t come soon enough.
The Photograph is released in UK theatres on 6 March 2020.
