When you commission a bespoke cake, not only can you expect fresh, free-range and organic ingredients, but 10 per cent of the sale goes toward a fund that provides birthday cakes for orphaned children in West Africa.
Guaranteed to make the cake taste even sweeter is the knowledge that you will have contributed towards giving a free birthday cake each month for orphans in their partner organisation in Nigeria (Association of Mother and Children Welfare), which is run by Kathy Barrera, an American who has lived in Nigeria for the last 40 years.
Founder of Good Cake Day, Chinelo Awa believes that business should be more than just making profit, but about giving back too. Her interest in supporting orphanages was sparked from a very young age when she recalls accompanying her mum to orphanages to help those less fortunate. She says: “Orphans are very close to my heart and I wanted to do something to support them. Okay, I’m not solving world problems, but in my own way I feel like I am making a difference. Birthdays are a very special time. When you are alone in the world, getting a birthday cake goes a long way to giving that affirmation that you are loved and valued.”
Good Cake Day sends the funds to a partner organisation in Nigeria who bakes the cakes every month and distributes them to the children of the orphanage on their birthdays.
One pound from every £10 goes towards the social enterprise.
