Children of Blood and Bone movie trailer just dropped, and the small peak into the Afro-fantasy world of Orïsha is everything we were hoping for.

In an explosion of colour, magic and more A-list stars than you can count, the first preview into the magical kingdom of Orïsha is finally here. Children of Blood and Bone movie, directed by celebrated director, Gina Prince-Bythewood is not out until January 2027, but Melan Magazine was invited to an early preview of the movie trailer.
The movie is based on the 2018 best-selling book by Tomi Adeyemi who is also one of the exec producers. She also co-wrote the script with Gina Prince-Bythewood.

The trailer introduces us to this fan-favourite world of Orïsha, which is inspired by Yoruba culture and mythology. The movie follows the epic fantasy journey in which a young woman, Zélie (played by Thuso Mbedu) goes on a heroic quest to reclaim the magic that was violently stolen from her people. She and her brother ally with the daughter and son of the king to fight back against his brutal rule.
Children of Blood and Bone: A review
The A-list list cast does not disappoint. In their elaborate costumes hair and makeup, familiar faces have fully taken on their characters, some of them almost becoming unrecognisable. Leading the cast is Thuso Mbedu as Zélie with Damson Idris as Prince Inan. Amandla Stenberg plays Princess Amari and Tosin Cole is Tzain. Other favourites teased in the trailer are Bukky Bakray, Cynthia Erivo, Lashana Lynch, Chiwetel Ejiofor as King Saran, Academy Award® winner Regina King as Queen Nehanda, with Idris Elba and Academy Award® winner Viola Davis.

Other famous faces spotted in the trailer include Nollywood icon Richard Mofe-Damijo and Nigerian singer-songwriter Ayra Starr.
As a fan of the original books, I devoured the short preview into the spectacle and magic of the people and aesthetics of Orïsha. Eyes wide and holding my breath, I was hoping the movie trailer would deliver on my expectations. It did. There is always a lot riding on movies perceived as Black productions, even those with Hollywood budgets. My hope is that people support this movie in the way we all supported Black Panther and the idea of Wakanda. That’s the only way we can get more of our stories told. The countdown to January 2027 has begun. Will you be heading to the cinema to watch the Children of Blood and Bone movie?
