Tartuffe Remixed

Tartuffe (Remixed) reimagines Molière’s timeless comedy through the lens of a contemporary Nigerian–Jamaican family. Adapted and directed by Darren Raymond, the play blends razor-sharp comedy, spoken word, music, and beautifully crafted rhyming verse.

The premise of the play follows the outspoken Afolabi–Williams family as they gather at Oga Afolabi’s mansion for the wedding of his daughter. With relatives arriving from far and wide, family traditions are in full swing, emotions are running high, and opinions are never in short supply. But when Tartuffe, a charismatic man of God who has won Oga’s unwavering trust, takes up residence in the family home, old wounds reopen, loyalties are tested, and faith itself becomes a battleground.

Oscar and Olivier Award-winning actor Mark Rylance plays the titular role. He joins a strong cast, which includes: Sara Mokonen, Christopher Mbaki, Morenike Onajobi, Nakeba Buchanan, Craig Blake, Blanche Williams, and award-winning Sierra Leonean storyteller and actor Usifu Jalloh.

Black Market Place

The Big September Black Market Place is back! Last year’s event welcomed nearly 2,000 shoppers and this year’s event promises to be even bigger and better.

More than 50 Black-owned brands will be on hand for you to shop a wide range of items. From books and handmade creations, African fashion and accessories, jewellery and beauty. There will also be delicious food and treats. This is not one to miss.

Red Bull Bring The Vim

If you love Afrobeats music and dance, then you won’t want to miss this year’s Red Bull Bring The Vim.

The crew-versus-crew Afro dance competition returns for a third year at Boxpark Croydon on 12 September. The competition celebrates styles rooted in the African diaspora – from Amapiano and Afrobeats to Afro-fusion and beyond.

On the night, there will be four international Afro dance crews from UK, Belgium, France and Spain coming together for the first time to battle it out using choreography, freestyle, musicality.

Remi Burgz, BBC 1Xtra radio broadcaster, will be on hosting duties and CULTUR FM, a global music and culture platform, will deliver DJ sets, DJ battles and soundtrack the afterparty all night long.

Woman of the moment: Audre Lorde

The Immortal Sisterhood Live 

The Immortal Sisterhood LIVE  is an ensemble collaboration that celebrates the journey of remarkable women through sound, opera, movement, live cello, violin and poetry.

The production is based on multi-award winning broadcaster and published author Gemma Cairney’s book The Immortal Sisterhood, which explores the lives of 12 remarkable women throughout history. The women include: Grace Jones, Wang Zhenyi, Pamela Colman Smith, Audre Lorde, Betty Davis, Marsha P Johnson, Nanny of The Maroons and Pharaoh Hatshepsut.

The UK production follows the world premiere at Lincoln Center, New York last January.

Fight Like A Girl

This is your chance to see Fight Like A Girl, a film based on a true story, starring Ama Qamata and Hakeem Kae-Kazim.

Fight Like A Girl tells the harrowing story of a young Congolese woman who is forced to work in an illegal mineral mine. She escapes her captors, and begins rebuilding her life after joining an all-women boxing club in Goma. The story is based in part on the life of Clarck Ntambwe, who also appears in the film, and the remarkable community of female boxers trained by her coach, Balezi “Kibomango” Bagunda. A former child soldier who became a champion boxer, Kibomango dedicated himself to training young women affected by violence in eastern Congo.

Tragically, Kibomango was killed in January 2025 during renewed fighting in eastern Congo while helping evacuate children from a village under attack. The film’s director, Matthew Leutwyler, who had worked closely with Kibomango and the women of the boxing club for several years, was directly involved in that evacuation and helping get the children across the border to safety in Rwanda.

The film was shot entirely on location in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo, with Ama and Hakeem starring alongside a largely Congolese cast of non-actors.

Cranes by Demi Wilson-Smith

Cranes is a moving depiction of what can happen when you’re in the wrong place at the wrong time. Written and performed by Demi Wilson-Smith, Cranes is inspired by a true event; a life-altering encounter of attending her first protest.

“It’s 2010. Summer (played by Demi) has just turned eighteen. She’s lucky enough to have the rest of her life to look forward to. She has always dreamed of being a photographer – but it’s hard to dream about the future when the world around you is on fire. What is there to look forward to exactly? The solution? Change the world. Duh. By going to a protest obviously. She has the best day of her life, literally. Things change, but not in the way she expects.”

Cranes is part of the groundbreaking initiative championing the next generation of British playwrights – The Ryan Calais Cameron Season.
