Black hair guru and Hair Lounge salon founder, Charlotte Mensah has released her debut book, Good Hair, The Essential Guide to Afro, Textured and Curly Hair and it’s everything we hoped it would be.

Charlotte Mensah

A visit to the Black hair Mecca aka Hair Lounge in London’s Portobello Road is like a warm, soothing hug for your hair’s wellbeing. Charlotte Mensah, owner and founder of the stylish hair salon, has condensed her knowledge and skills of three decades of tending the crowning glories of thousands of people into a simple guide for how to get the best out of your hair.

Good Hair, The Essential Guide to Afro, Textured and Curly Hair is Charlotte’s debut book and along with essential tips and tricks to help you understand your hair, readers will learn about Charlotte’s journey in hair, which began in the 80s, cutting her teeth at the world famous Mayfair-based Splinters hair salon under Winston Isaacs, a journey which culminated in her being honoured as the first Black woman to be inducted in the British Hairdressing Hall of Fame.

“This book is a how-to guide, a history lesson, and an intimate recollection of my life experiences all rolled into one.”

Full of case studies, step by step how-to guides, glossy pictures and tips and tricks, the book really is at once a riveting read but also a companion book for anyone who wants to understand the why, how and therefore of Afro, textured and curly hair.

Charlotte’s passion for her trade shines throughout the book, and it’s inspiring to see how she has created a powerful brand that now includes an award-winning Manketti Oil range of hair care products. Women empowerment is important to Charlotte and so emerging women in business will be inspired by her account of how she went from apprentice to entrepreneur.

As Charlotte writes in her foreword: “This book is a how-to guide, a history lesson, and an intimate recollection of my life experiences all rolled into one. It’s a tool for getting to know, looking after and loving your hair.”
