A highlight of the fashion calendar is the annual Colour of the Year announcement and this year, contrasting with 2019’s warm coral tone, Pantone Color Institute declared that Classic Blue (Pantone 19-4052) is the 2020 Colour of the Year.
This shade can easily drain the colour out of lighter skin tones, but on darker complexions, Classic Blue will no doubt pop and complement, lets face it, like most colours do on Black skin.
With thoughts of a new decade and fresh beginnings behind the colour selection, the color institute explained: “Instilling calm, confidence and connection, this enduring blue highlights our desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era.”
We like the idea of peaceful, serene new beginnings and frankly, anything that will help us get there, we’ll take it.
Every year, when it comes to the announcement of the Colour of the Year, my thoughts turn to the Nigerian/West African custom of “calling colour” for an Asoebi, the traditional practice of close friends and family wearing the same colour, fabric and style at important ceremonies like weddings and special parties.
