The yearly unveiling of the Pantone ‘Colour of the Year’, is enthusiastically adopted throughout the fashion, beauty and lifestyle industries as THE hot shade to use, but this year, the chosen colour appears to have been given an even bigger stamp of approval by celebs and beauty aficionados. For 2018, it’s a stunning, deep shade of ultra violet.

According to the Gods of colour, “we are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination. It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to ultra violet.” As whimsical and contemplative as that sounds, it’s an undoubtedly lovely colour that we will definitely be incorporating into our makeup bags this season. Here’s a few inspirational ways to wear the colour du jour.

Eye liner

Kerry Washington’s look gives the perfect example of how to do ultra violet subtly. Take a kohl pencil and focus the line on the outer corners of the lid, making your brown eyes pop. Using a pencil brush, blur the lines and add two to three coats of mascara. Finish the look with a clear glossy lip, groomed brows and fresh skin.

Eye shadow

Earlier this month, Octavia Spencer’s Golden Globes makeup look was a beautiful take on the ultra violet trend. Muted with brown tones, the stunning actress made the look evening-appropriate with a wash of smoky purple all over the lid. Wear with flawless skin, bronze cheeks and a matte lip for a look that’s all in the eyes.

Whether you’re going all-out Riri or something a little subtler, opt for blue-toned purples that look fabulous on deep and medium skin tones (that won’t make you look like you’re playing dress up.) Keep your eye makeup simple and either go for a similar toned blush or a brown on the cheeks to balance out the purple.

Nails

These intergalactic gel nails are the easy way to nail (sorry for the pun) the ultra violet trend if you don’t have time for makeup. What girl can say no to glitter? If you’re doing your nails yourself, apply two coats of ultra violet over your favourite base coat and top with a subtle glitter.
