Netflix has announced the date of Self Made: Inspired By The Life of Madame C.J. Walker, its upcoming all-star biopic starring Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer.
The story of Madam C.J. Walker is a story that has inspired many Black women over the years, often serving as an inspirational narrative for would-be entrepreneurs and businesswomen, not just in America but all over the world. That’s why we are so looking forward to seeing her story brought to life in the new, original Netflix four-part series, due to be aired on 20 March 2020.
Octavia Spencer, who won her Best Supporting Actress Oscar for The Help in which she starred with Viola Davis, is also one of the executive producers of the series.
The series charts the story of Madam C.J. Walker, the trailblazing African American haircare entrepreneur who was America’s first female self-made millionaire at the time of her death in 2019.
Inspired by the book, On Her Own Ground written by Walker’s great-great-granddaughter A’Lelia Bundles, the Netflix original series, Self Made brings the uplifting story of this cultural icon to the screen for the first time. Against all odds, C.J. Walker overcame post-slavery racial and gender biases, personal betrayals, and business rivalries to build a ground-breaking brand that revolutionized Black haircare, as she simultaneously fought for social change.
In what is sure to be must-watch viewing, the series also stars some well-known names in the character roles. Blair Underwood plays C.J. Walker’s husband, while Tiffany Haddish plays her daughter Leila. Carmen Ejogo plays Walker’s business rival Addie Monroe. Other notable members of the cast include Garrett Morris as Walker’s father-in-law, Kevin Carroll as her long-time lawyer Ransom and Bill Bellamy as Ransom’s cousin Sweetness.
The four-part series, Self Made: Inspired By The Life of Madame C.J. Walker, will be released on 20 March 2020.
