The exciting new super group formed this autumn to bring us Songs From The Stage an album that brings together some of our favourite classics from musicals such as Dreamgirls, The Bodyguard, Beautiful, Cats, Rent, Funny Girl, Memphis and more.
Helpless, one of the songs that features on the album, is from Hamilton, which opened in the UK on 6 December 2017. The highly anticipated show, which first opened in New York in 2015, has already enjoyed rave reviews. First conceived by the writer Lin-Manuel Miranda as a hip-hop ode based on the life of Alexander Hamilton, one of America’s founding fathers, according to The Guardian, is “One of the most ambitious and record-breaking productions ever staged on Broadway, subsequently winning 11 Tony awards and the 2016 Pulitzer prize for drama.”
One of the attractions for audiences is no doubt the diverse cast in the production. The Leading ladies have previously spoken about diversity in theatre. Speaking in a recent article in Pride Magazine, Beverly, said: “I like the fact that the story of Alexander Hamilton is being told with a cast diverse as you like. I think theatre has always led the charge on trying to be more diverse, ahead of other mediums. You’ll see casting decisions that you wouldn’t see on TV in theatre first. Motown: The Musical and even my show Memphis had majority black casts, and it’s great to see that.”
