Sisters are doing it for themselves! Hands up if you, or someone in your close circle of friends has bitten the bullet to start up a side hustle, or gone whole hog to launch a brand? If yes, this one’s for you! Creative connoisseurs are at the heart of the inaugural Precious Lifestyle Awards, a ceremony created to root for the woman of colour with a bomb brand.
At Melan Magazine we thrive on seeing women of colour succeed in business, and that’s why it warms our heart to see another opportunity to celebrate those sisters who have launched their lifestyle brands, many times from a kitchen table or through utilising the latest technology, and often whilst juggling motherhood, full-time jobs (or both).

Foluke Akinlose MBE, founder of Precious Awards is rapidly increasing her stable of awards that celebrate women of colour. Last year she debuted the Precious Hair and Beauty Awards, and this year she turns her attention to honouring some of the best hair, beauty and fashion brands, best podcasts, most engaging social media influencers and finest writing talent of the last year.
Ms Akinlose said: “I am honoured to have this additional opportunity to celebrate and applaud the achievements of women of colour. The hair and beauty industry is not known for being the most inclusive, so it’s been exciting to see the emergence of some very innovative brands for and by women of colour over the last few years. This lack of visibility can be seen in the fashion arena. Women of colour are creating their own platforms and getting their voices heard via podcasts and books. I cannot wait to see the gems of creativity and innovation that we are set to unearth.”
The judges at the Precious Lifestyle Awards will be some of our most admired and respected peers. They include respected freelance journalist and editor of Black Hair magazine, Keysha Davis, media and broadcasting queen, Angie Greaves, culturally connected PR & Communications consultant, Iola C. Williams, one of the UK’s best-loved skincare experts Antonia Burrell and Suki Fuller – an Analytical Storyteller and globally recognised speaker, mentor and business advisor. Host for the evening will be the talented Lisa Bent (columnist and founder of Self-Central).
Nominations for the awards (see the categories below) close midnight on 27 June 2018 with the longlist of nominees revealed on 29 June 2018. To help a woman of colour you admire get the recognition she deserves, nominate now!
