Fifth is an exciting new brand that looks set to become a modern classic. Feminine fabrics are cut into boyish shapes, while historic art forms such as crochet, are embedded into a collection that is driven by current culture, and tailoring is layered with relaxed sportswear.
Showcasing as part of The Fashion Collective, whose participants have all taken part in The Prince’s Trust Enterprise Programme, and hosted by Fashions Finest; Fifth’s SS18 collection sees a clinical colour palette met with the soft textures of sheepskin and mohair, and relaxed jerseys mix with trans-seasonal wools. Bridging streetwear with minimalism, the Fifth woman is modern in her approach to style. The woman behind the label is the talented London-based fashion designer, Marina Olupitan.
The 26-year-old fashion designer finds her inspiration in architecture, modern art, and vintage sportswear. During the creative process, she experiments with various finishing techniques and fabrics to create her garments. She produces her garments following the ethos ‘less is more’.
We briefly caught up with her before the start of this year’s London Fashion Week to ask her five questions.
Describe yourself in three words
Passionate, perfectionist and energetic.
Can you tell us about your fashion training?
I studied fashion design and graduated from Manchester School of Art with a bachelor’s degree. After graduating, I spent three years working for a womenswear label where I learned all the inner workings of running a fashion business.
What are the biggest challenges in your career?
I’ve found funding to be my biggest challenge in building my brand. A lot of money goes into a fashion start up.
Where does your inspiration come from?
My inspiration mainly comes from modernist architecture, streetwear, and historic sportswear. I am also heavily influenced by Scandinavian films and cultural dress.
Do you have a Muse you wish you could see wearing your designs?
I would love to see dress the movie star, Zoe Kravitz. She’s that quintessentially cool girl that my brand is made for.
