Celebrating its 37th outing, Afro Hair and Beauty LIVE 2018, saw thousands of men, women and children of colour converge at the Business Design Centre in Islington, London, to get their annual fix of all things Afro hair and beauty.

This year, the show catered to a beautifully wide range of guests, from Afro Hijabis (black Muslims with natural hair) to young children learning to embrace their natural hair, proving that when it comes to hair, beauty and lifestyle in general, representation truly matters.

A visit to the show guarantees guests will discover exciting new brands and this year, it didn’t disappoint. A variety of international brands exhibited for the first time including R&R Luxury, a Nigerian-based skincare brand that exemplifies luxury to the highest standards, whilst Sibahle Collection showcased their commitment to defying the status quo and beauty standards with dolls that encourage black girls to embrace their natural beauty.

The fashion show, produced by Haiti73 agency, made bold statements on the catwalk and guests witnessed a mother and son making their debut into the industry. Yevan Bellot, ’47 years young’, who had originally applied on behalf of her son, Joshua, 17, said: “As an advocate of female body positivity, I always questioned why producers of hair and beauty shows don’t consider (or rarely use) women like me to walk the runway – bald, mature in age and plus size. Is being large or bald not beautiful?”

This year the show attracted many newcomers including US-based Twist It Up and melanin experts Urban Skin Rx. Both were well received by visitors. Rachel Roff, founder of Urban Skin Rx said: “The overall experience was amazing! Coming all the way from the United States was a big investment but it was well worth it. The attendees welcomed us and were very receptive to our brand.”

Another highlight was Treasure Tress hosting a VIP Kink Back Lounge filled with games, giveaways, cupcakes and manicures courtesy of WAH Nails.

Verna McKenzie, organiser of the event, said:

Every year, thousands of people attend our event simply for the fact this is one of few places where, regardless of skin complexion or hair texture, they can receive expert advice or consultations, enjoy pampering treatments and leave feeling empowered and informed.”

She continued: “AHBL’s offering is as diverse as our community and the overall experience for most has been a positive one – something which, 37 years on, makes us extremely proud.”
