Award season continues, and Monday 15 January saw the 49th NAACP Image Awards in California, a multicultural awards show presented by the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People.

Aside from the celebrations of outstanding representations and achievements of people of colour in television music and literature, there were, of course, some stunning outfits to match. An explosion of glitz and glitter was balanced with the right amount of minimalist chic. Here are our picks of the best-dressed whose style you’ll definitely want to steal.

Halle Berry

At 51, Berry stunned us all with a slinky Reem Acra dress. The front and back of her dress were made up of a sultry, sheer black polka dot material with a risqué black lace panel up the middle, covering just enough. With an effortless low bun and a sweeping long fringe, she’s just as much a heart-throb as she’s always been.

 

Ava DuVernay

Entertainer of the Year was presented by Mary J Blige to the glorious Ava DuVernay, sporting a striking red Greta Constantine number, with frill detailing and wide legs. Teamed with a smoky eye and gold statement earrings, the look screamed sophisticated girl-boss.

 

Issa Rae

Issa Rae’s Marc Jacobs extravaganza was every bit eye-catching as it was elegant. High-necked and crop-sleeved, the emerald maxi-gown was paired with a simple gold clutch and a sleek and elegant top-knot.

 

Samira Wiley

The American actress and model was slaying in a gorgeous gown by Romona Keveza. Sunshine yellow with sparkly detail, this look was completed with a deep berry lip and a clean, slick hairstyle.

 

Tracee Ellis Ross

Who said glitz and glitter was left in 2017? Ross ramped up the glamour with a simple yet dazzling gold dress by Narciso Rodriguez, giving us major sequin-envy without the overkill. The mid length and minimal hairstyle made a strong statement by the lady in gold.

 

Niecy Nash

Best-known for her appearances on American television, the comedian and model turned heads in a Mac Duggal wrap dress, continuing on the golden theme. Nash’s tousled waves and glamorous makeup was definitely a glitzed-up version of the classic Grecian Goddess look.

 

Kerry Washington

How could Kerry Washington ever not make a best-dressed list? She opted for a sweetheart neckline Michael Kors gown, all in black and oh-so-chic. With silver drop earrings and a matching bracelet, her look was simplistic and gorgeous: classic Kerry Washington.

 

Yara Shahidi

Vera Wang plus Yara Shahidi was always going to be an explosion of cool glamour and she gave us exactly that. Drop sleeves and chiffon chest detail complemented the layered full skirt. Keeping it fresh-faced, Shahidi made a statement with her thick long braids in a gorgeous, sleek ponytail.
