How many of us were as self-confident and poised as 17-year old Priscilla Samey? She’s the high school student who, when no one asked her to be their date for prom, decided to take her Harvard acceptance letter instead!

She tweeted a photo of herself wearing an African print dress, giving a kiss to her ‘date’, saying: “Couldn’t find a man to accept me for prom, so I took a college that did.”

Good on you young queen! The message, which has been liked 126K times so far, is the second time in a month that the teen has been in the media. Harvard was only one of seven Ivy League universities that accepted the first generation American and daughter of West African immigrants. Quite an achievement for someone who only spoke French until she was eight.

In an interview with thetab.com, Priscilla spoke about her excitement and happiness at her acceptance at the top universities. The feature in the publication also includes her common app essay, (our equivalent of a UCAS Personal Statement), where she talks about her admiration for her father, who despite being a qualified doctor, struggled to find work and ended up having to accept entry level positions. We love hearing stories like this which show that even when odds are stacked against us, by working doubly hard and having a clear focus on what you want to achieve, much like the young black male students of Cambridge University, you can buck the trend to achieve success.
